10 Uses For Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has become increasingly popular during the last few years due to its versatility and health benefits. Though it was originally used in the Caribbean and other tropical countries, it has quickly become a household staple in most parts of the world. Coconut oil can be used for practically anything, ranging from beauty to cooking. It can even reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer. Coconut oil is completely natural and affordable too. We’ve come up with 10 ways in which you can use this fantastic product.

1. Moisturiser

Believe it or not, coconut oil can be used as a moisturiser for your face. It makes a great alternative to aloe vera and is non-greasy. Apply to wet skin and massage. Leave in for a few minutes before wiping off any leftover bits of oil.

2. Make Up Remover

Coconut oil also works well as a face and eye make up remover. It is refreshing and won’t irritate your eyes. Dab a little coconut oil on your finger or a cotton wool pads and rub gently on your face or closed eyes. Wipe off with a warm flannel.

3. Lip Balm

Coconut oil can be combined with beeswax and shea butter to make a softening lip balm that is ideal for chapped lips. Add a little red powder or food colouring (we recommend 1/2 a teaspoon) for colour. Coconut oil has an SPF of around 4 so you’ll be sorted for the summer.

4. Deodorant

Avoid shop-bought deodorants that are full of chemicals and make your own instead. Simply combine coconut oil with cornstarch and baking powder and apply to your underarms.

5. Hair Conditioner

Coconut oil does wonders to your hair and some stars – including Blake Lively – swear by it. If your hair is feeling dry, work a teaspoon of coconut oil (preferably pure or refined) through the ends and leave in overnight. You could also get rid of that nasty dandruff by massaging coconut oil in your scalp.

6. Body Scrub

Wipe away any dead skin cells with a homemade coconut body scrub. Stir sugar into coconut oil and use as an exfoliating body scrub. You can also use this on your face too. Remember to rinse off thoroughly for extra radiant skin.

7. Eczema cream

Treat eczema by applying a thin layer of coconut oil to the effected area. Use 3-4 times daily to reduce any irritation. Extra virgin coconut oil works best.

8. Sore Throat Remedy

If you suffer from sore throats, put away from the lozenges (which are full of sugar) and start using coconut oil. Mix with honey and take a teaspoon every morning. Coconut oil and honey act as anti-flammatory agents.

9. After-sun

Spent too long in the sun but don’t have any sunscreen? Well, coconut oil could come in handy here. Combine coconut oil with aloe vera gel to soothe any burns and prevent peeling.

10. Cooking

Probably the most obvious one on this list, but coconut oil can be used in cooking. As a superfood, coconut oil is much healthier than vegetable oil and sunflower oil since it contains iron, lauric acid and vitamins (namely E and K). Coconut oil can even be spread on toast! It helps with allergies and facilitates digestion.
