A student’s best friend–the NUS extra card

As students, we all know how tough it can be to make that student loan last long enough in an attempt to avoid the end of the semester penny counting to make sure you have enough to get by. Over the Christmas period we tested how much of a difference an NUS extra card can really make during the most expensive time of year. The part of the year that normally always seems to clear out your bank and leaves you to survive off 17p noodles throughout January until loan day.

With the NUS extra card allowing you to gain discounts from stores and restaurants such as New Look, Prezzo, Frankie and Benny’s and Dominos, it means your student loan can stretch that little bit further. Also providing you with discounts for holidays, such as EasyJet, making saving for the summer that little bit easier.

The good people over at the National Union of Students were kind enough to send two NUS extra cards over to Student Wire to carry out this little experiment. From November until now Harriet Morrall and our editor, Mary-Kate Reynolds have been tracking their spending and saving habits with the help of the NUS extra card.

With over 170 brands to save from we’re not going to list every single one, but it’s not just clothes that you can save on. NUS extra are partnered with brands such as Endsleigh car and travel insurance, Apple, Thorpe Park (Merlin Group), Odeon and so many more.

It’s a little upsetting that I’ve spent so much money in the first place, but we won’t dwell on that. As you can see I’ve bought bits and bobs all over the place, I’ve been out for meals, ordered pizza and paid for my gym membership too (which doesn’t mean I’ve necessarily been). Now for Mary-Kate’s:
