Have you ever had a bad letting problem? Struggled to understand what and why you are paying high agency fees? So did University of York’s Ryan Hill. During the course of setting up his second year’s accommodation, Ryan had a bad experience with a local student-focused letting agency, and quickly discovered he was not the only student struggling with them. After speaking to numerous students about their experiences, he found the agency had been dictating various aspects such as telling students they must be dressed a certain way if they wanted to be picked up and transported for the property viewings, as well as having multiple last minute viewing cancellations, Ryan felt there should and needed to be an alternative.
With over 6 years of property experience, and having worked as an estate agent for some of the biggest companies within the country Ryan felt able to rise to the challenge. With his extensive knowledge and experience of working in lettings, he decided to use his skills to help the students of the University of York, and provide an alternative service focused on the students.
Currently The Student Agency is run by Ryan and his girlfriend, Emily Atkins, and they are working together to make the dream a reality. Both full time students, they are dedicating their time to The Student Agency, helping other students understand what properties are available for them, and to help them navigate the difficult waters of first time property rental.
The Student Agency is a fantastic alternative to current letting agents as it is run by students, for students. Although still in the fresh stages of development both Ryan and Emily have invested time and energy into making the Student Agency a success, things such as the no agency fees, puts vital pounds back into the pocket of students, which as we all know is essential nowadays. Especially for a few extra Jaeger bombs.
The Student Agency’s aims are:
Reduce the cost of agency fees for students by not charging any fees to students
Treat students fairly and properly, without being told how they should dress for viewings.
Give a voice to the international students, who may find it harder to find properties due to the language and cultural barriers.
Hold events on campus for students, so that they can come and get advice regarding their property search. The events will be free, impartial advice, regardless of whether they intend to use The Student Agency or not.
Ryan and Emily already have a number of fantastic high – end properties they have taken on including both The Boulevard on Hull Road, and Foss Studios on Lawrence Street. The Student Agency originally started at the University of York; however it has recently expanded to York St John, the neighbouring university in the city of York, so that all students within York have access to this student focused service. Ryan and Emily would really like to take The Student Agency, to other universities across the whole of the UK in the future, such as not being charged agency fees, so that all students can receive a better service and not miss out because of a lack of knowledge of the property processes.
