Re-Kånken: Fashion Meets Compassion

Without Nature We’re Nothing. That’s the slogan of Fjällräven’s new Re-Kånken and it’s completely true. Without the trees, we wouldn’t be able to breathe. Without streams and rivers, thousands would dehydrate. Without plants and healthy soil, we would all starve. Our planet is a precious thing. Sometimes we can become so wrapped up in our own lives that we forget to think about the greater consequences of our actions. Spreading the message of conservation and consideration is a crucial one. That’s the main reason why I love the new Re-Kånken.

The Kånken has quickly become a much loved bag for thousands of us. The recognisable rectangular shape with the iconic Fjällräven Fox snuggled in the centre of the logo has already made a huge mark on the fashion world. The innovative shape and design of Fjällräven products has led to the likes of Bradley Cooper, Kristen Stewart, Billie Piper, Mia Wasikowska and Ellen Page to name a few, sporting the brand.

The Re-Kånken looks and feels like the regular Kånken that we’ve grown to love except this time, it’s been created with 95% recycled materials (1 yarn and 11 bottles). For only £3 more than the regular Kånken, the bag will be created using 75% less water, 67% less chemicals and 39% less energy. Even the box has been recycled!

The bag itself comes in a whole variety of colours with the option of choosing the regular size or a mini version. It’s main pocket is like a bottomless pit ( a good thing of course!). I’m yet to find something I use daily that won’t fit inside this backpack! Having said this, it’s not too large. It fits comfortably on your back and feels surprising light and weightless. There are smaller pockets hidden inside, on the sides and on the front for you to stash all the rubbish we usually carry around with us. By this, I mean the endless tissues, lip balms, receipts and mints! The top handle also means that it’s also great to carry like a handbag, simply flip back the straps so they cant be seen. This bag is multifunctional and after using it for over a month, I’m yet to find the slightest thing wrong with it!

It’s always nice to see companies use their power and influence for good. Fjällräven have contributed with conservation of the Arctic Fox from the mid 1990’s with the help from their ‘Help The Arctic Fox’ collection. The Kånken was first created to help Swedish children carry their books and folders without back problems and since then, they’ve used their social media influence to encourage us to get outdoors. Now they’ve created a revolutionary way to cut back on the harm created during production. There are now more reasons to buy a Re-Kånken and less reasons to feel guilty about treating yourself to one!

We shouldn’t be killing our planet in the name of fashion, we should be supporting it!
