Living in the dorm can be one of the most exhilarating or one of the worst experiences depending on how you look at it and how you decide to act. If you constantly complain, then your dorm stay will be unpleasant. On the other hand, if you decide to use it to your advantage, then you’ll enjoy yourself.
Having a small room all for yourself can be cool. It might be tiny (they usually are), but at least you have some privacy. The only problem is that rooms are usually cold and uninformed which can make you feel uninspired. So, here are some ideas on how to turn an ordinary dorm room into your little haven.
If it’s allowed, paint the walls
Some dormitories let residents decorate their rooms if they promise to return everything as they found it upon arrival. So if you feel dissatisfied with mundane white walls, feel free to grab a bucket of paint and a paint roller, but first make sure with the management that it’s okay to do it.
Reserve some space for studying
Dorm rooms can be too small so dedicating a certain corner for one activity can be tricky, but you can still make it happen. There’s nothing more tempting than studying in bed, but beds should be for sleeping and relaxing. Usually, there’s a desk in the room, so make it organised and tidy, which in return will make your studying much easier. Everything’s better when it’s neat!
Even if you can’t paint the walls, there are still ways to make your room look unique and new. There must be something you like, a movie poster, your favourite quote, a fluffy toy or your fave pillow. Whatever it is, own it and put it proudly on display. Adding something that’s uniquely yours will make you feel more comfortable and the place will seem more homelike. There are many styles to choose from, and there’s got to be something you like, even if it doesn’t seem like it. Try looking for some inspiration and give that room a makeover!
Clean the mess
Being a student ain’t easy. Too many responsibilities, yet, there’s something you should take care of first: clean the room regularly. It can be difficult at first, but once you get used to it, it’ll become easy. So gather all trash lying around and throw it out. In Australia, many dormitories have strict rules regarding room tidying, so hiring a company for junk removal in Sydney to deal with it, isn’t uncommon. Even if your dormitory isn’t strict like that, you should still keep your room nice and tidy!
Add a rug
Aside from keeping your feet warm, rugs are a great decoration piece. You can find them in many shapes, sizes and patterns. From Bohemian to simple Scandinavian, you just have to choose the one you like the most and put it wherever you please. Your room will look warmer and more like home!
Potted plants, of course
Even if you’re not into botany that much, having a tiny cactus or a fern, will automatically make your room more aesthetic. Plants don’t require that much effort, just light and water, and even if you’re busy, that’s something you can do regularly. Try with a small pot first, and if you like it, add a bigger one sometime after.
Embrace the nostalgia
Missing your family, friends, pets and hometown is completely normal. Just remember to go out and meet new people! But, when it comes to nostalgia, you can use it as decoration for your room. Take all the photos of your loved ones and hang them on the wall. That way, your room will have that Tumblr vintage vibe and your favourite people will be with you even if they’re far away!
