Huddersfield is a great place but doesn’t always receive the attention it deserves. If you’re planning on heading down, here are 5 things you should definitely check out.
This has been by far one of my favourite places and a very popular place to visit in Huddersfield. Castle Hill is located near Newsome village, approximately 10 minutes drive from the centre. The Hill dates back 4000 years and is known for its Victoria Tower. It’s a beautiful place to walk, have a warm drink and simply enjoy the beautiful view. The Victoria Tower is usually open to explore (small admission fee of £1.85). Inside, you can go to the rooftop terrace, look through the telescope and enjoy the tremendous views of Huddersfield and its surroundings. It’s breathtaking! Castle Hill is the perfect spot to take time out at and relax, read a book, have a picnic, fly kites, take your dog for a walk and enjoy some time out with friends. Whatever the occasion, Castle Hill never fails to please and is definitely worth taking a trip to.
Bar Maroc is another popular place that you must visit in Huddersfield! It’s unique Moroccan themed decor means it’s not your everyday bar or cafe. It is the perfect place to unwind and relax, have a few cocktails, drink mint tea, mojitos or any soft or alcoholic beverages. One of the best things about this place is that they have the most delicious vegetarian and vegan pizzas! All the ingredients and toppings are of your own choosing. To top it all off, bar Maroc has a beautiful open terrace with the Moroccan feel flowing out onto it. Bar Maroc is an amazing place to relax and have a few drinks, eat, read a book with a cup of mint tea, have a nice gathering with friends and family. It is a great place for any occasions and should be on your must- visit list!
Greenhead Park is a 7-10 minutes walk from the town centre and is one of the largest and most popular parks in Huddersfield. It’s a great place to walk, relax and enjoy some time with your friends, family or pets. There’s a paddling pool, beautifully maintained lake (with ducks), tennis courts, basketball courts, War Memorial, spacious playgrounds and a skate park. If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, there is a lovely conservatory and a cafe to enjoy some delicious breakfast/lunch and enjoy the green scenery around you. The best thing about Greenhead Park is not only the beautiful scenery, Italian fountains and flowerbeds, but the fact it is all free.So grab a blanket, few snacks and drinks or a book and take the opportunity to relax and recharge yourself in nature.
Stanedge Tunnel and Visitor Centre
Located on the outskirts of Huddersfield, this is an extraordinary place to visit and just a 5-10 minutes walk from Marsden railway station. If you love nature and hiking then this is the place for you! The visitors centre has great exhibitions showing the history of the tunnels and those who were a part of it and also has a lovely small cafe waiting just outside overlooking the canal and the picture-perfect scenery. To make this more of an adventure, there is also a guided boat trip. The guides are so lovely and friendly and will talk you through the history of the tunnels. The canal boat trips are very refreshing and is another great way to experience the tunnel, its history and the nature.
Lawrence Batley Theatre
Located in the town centre, this building is one of the most beautiful historic buildings in Huddersfield. Lawrence Theatre is the place to be if you are in need of some excitement and entertainment. The theatre has events throughout the month, from classics, opera, plays, contemporary dance, comedians and many more. There is a bar inside the theatre for light refreshments and a coffee shop . There is always something going on at the theatre, so get looking and booking for your next adventure!
